How to write a creative brief

A useful creative brief defines the problem, the non-negotiable constraints, the decision-maker and the criteria for acceptance before production begins.

Clarity before production

A creative brief is not a collection of references or preferences. It is a decision document. It should state the business problem, the audience, what cannot change, what has already been attempted, who has final approval and how success will be recognized.

When these points remain open, the team makes strategic decisions during execution, when every correction is more expensive. A concise and decided brief is more useful than a long document that avoids responsibility.

Make approval measurable

The most frequently missing element is the acceptance criterion. Without it, approval depends on personal reactions at the end of the project. Writing the criterion in advance protects the ambition of the work, the budget and the relationship between client and creative partner.
